1. Manage stress

In extreme cases, some people need to take stress management classes or counseling to help them overcome their stress. Episodes that involve very explicit scenes, such as the death of a child, may haunt people for a long time. Often times, these violent episodes turn into what is known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is much harder to deal with this kind of stress than the normal stress most people experience during a normal day.
2. Practice looking at things from a different perspective
The ability to place yourself in others' shoes is an important aspect of being understanding and patient. Even if you have known a person all their life, you still may not know exactly what they are going through. To impact a person in a positive way, you have to be patient and understanding of their specific needs.
3. Work on yourself
You can't be a great role model if you don't constantly improve yourself. You should always look at the things that can be improved in your life. Perhaps, you're not as punctual as you'd like to be, or maybe you need to exercise more self-discipline. If there is something in your life that you don't like, start the process of changing it today.
4. Spend time with youth
Your time is one of the greatest gifts you can give to underprivileged children. Your donations are appreciated, but your time is priceless. Children never forget the caring acts of adults. Your actions can help shape a child's future.
5. Talk to someone
If something is bothering you or causing you to stress out, you need to talk with someone. Talking about your feelings is one of the greatest ways to manage your life. You may even get some really great advice.
6. Lead by example
If you are an influential person in someone's eyes, your actions will most likely dictate that person's actions. Therefore, you should be careful of what you say and do. You will ultimately lead by your example, so try to make it a good example.
7. Have fun
All work and no play makes for a boring day. People are attracted to those who have fun with their life. Moreover, having fun will help you keep your stress levels down.
8. Get involved in others' activities
If you want to be a great role model, you should invest your time learning to do the things that others like to do. They will appreciate that you took a genuine interest in their hobbies.
9. Help when you can
The way in which you help will vary among children. Sometimes, kids just want you to listen to them; others may actually need your financial help. Just remember, don't mistake helping for getting taken advantage of. You want to be a role model, not a pushover. You may be able to help a child by teaching them how to provide for themselves. As the saying goes: Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for his lifetime.
10. Never give up
It can be frustrating trying to keep your cool and be a great role model. Most people give up trying to be one. Unfortunately, the quitters severely dishearten any individual who truly looked up to them. Don't quit. Times may be hard, but you'll be a better person for trying to be a great role model.
